SmartState® Corner

The SmartState Program was created in 2002 by the South Carolina General Assembly to help transform the state’s economy. Central to the program was the recruitment of world-class researchers and scientists to serve as Endowed Chairs at the state’s three research-intensive universities, Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the University of South Carolina (USC). The Endowed Chairs reside within SmartState Centers of Economic Excellence and use their positions to conduct research that leads to innovative technologies and spin-off companies, provides educational opportunities for students and creates a leadership and workforce pipeline.

SmartState Endowed Chairs

South Carolina’s SmartState Program is home to more than 50 SmartState Centers of Economic Excellence and nearly 75 SmartState Endowed Chairs based at South Carolina’s three research-intensive universities, Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina.

The SmartState Program and the Endowed Chairs are aligned with industry sectors critical to South Carolina’s economy and to the world. SC Innovates invites you to connect with the SmartState Endowed Chairs.
