Collins Aerospace
Michel van Tooren, Ph.D., is a Technical Fellow in the area of Structures with a specialization in Composites, at Collins Aerospace R&T. His current research interests include manufacturing technology for thermoplastic composites, welding process certification and multi-disciplinary analysis and design. Prior to joining Collins Aerospace, van Tooren served as the SmartState® Endowed Chair in Multifunctional Materials and Structures at the University of South Carolina as well as the director of the university’s McNair Aerospace Center. In both positions, van Tooren led numerous university-corporate research projects in aerospace, advanced materials and 3D printing. His career began with Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, where he served as a professor of Systems Integration Aircraft for 25 years followed by 3 years at Fokker Aerostructures as Manager New Concept Development.
